Sergio’s Story was created in January 2024 by the Office for Victims of Crime (OVC) in recognition of National Human Trafficking Prevention Month in January. The story describes a young boys experience being labor trafficked and being part of a federal case. This story was created for youth between the ages of 12-18 to discuss the serious topic of human trafficking. It covers Sergio’s experience opening up to a trusted adult, navigating the criminal justice system with a victim advocate’s help, and the support he receives from family and a caseworker.
The story can be found on the Office for Victims of Crime website here. It is free to download and print, and is available in English, Spanish, Chinese, African French, Brazilian Portuguese, and Vietnamese. There is also an audiobook available.
Sergio’s Story has also been adapted from the graphic novel to a 7-minute video which can be found on the OVC Youtube Page here.
Connect for Freedom highly recommends Sergio’s Story as an additional lesson for ages 12-18. Teachers can also choose to implement it as an activity, homework, or classroom discussion.
