Are students required to be taught about human trafficking?

Yes, the NJDOE passed the 2022 NJ Curriculum Mandate and NJ State Guidelines N.J.S.A. 18A:6-131.2-131.3.

Guidelines for Schools on the Prevention of Human Trafficking of Students outlines what schools are required to teach and provide students regarding the topic of human trafficking. Feel free to view the mandate below.

How do we get started with the program?

Talk to your principal and/or superintendent.

We recommend you start a conversation about the Connect for Freedom program and discuss the program overview, implementation guide, response protocol, etc. This can all be found on our K-12 page under Superintendents/Principals.

Does our school need a resolution with the Board of Education?

Maybe...

We recommend you contact your superintendent to discuss what your school district requires. While all schools have different procedures and protocols, we do offer a sample resolution below.

How much does the Connect for Freedom program and materials cost?

Nothing!

All our lesson plans, presentations, handouts, posters, etc. are all FREE!

Where do you get your information from?

The government and reputable organizations.

All of our information is sourced from government agencies, research institutions, and nonprofits. Our materials come from the DHS Blue Campaign, National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, Polaris Project, The Exodus Road, Thorn, The Dibble Institute, etc.

Do you provide in-person training to faculty?

No, we recommend free online training materials.

There are many amazing organizations that offer free online human trafficking training which can be found on our K-12 page under Superintendents/Principals. We can connect your school with organizations that provide in-person training for staff if that is what your school would prefer; feel free to reach out to us at info@connectforfreedom.org.

What should I do if a student says they're a victim of online enticement, sextortion, or human trafficking?

Follow your school's response protocol.

Every school has a response protocol that all staff must follow if a student is victimized or abused. We recommend that you follow what is in place at your institution.
